Richard Beddie

Richard Beddie is a globally recognized leader in the fitness, physical activity, and exercise profession sectors, with more than 25 years of experience in industry leadership, governance, advocacy, and workforce development.
As Chief Executive of Exercise New Zealand (ExerciseNZ), Richard has played a pivotal role in advancing the exercise and fitness industry across New Zealand while championing the importance of physical activity as a key contributor to public health and wellbeing. He has been involved with ExerciseNZ since 1998 and previously served as President from 1999 to 2005. Prior to his leadership roles, Richard owned and operated multiple fitness facilities and developed extensive experience in exercise business management and operations.
Richard holds a Bachelor of Science in Statistics and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Canterbury, specializing in the fitness industry. He is a sought-after international speaker on fitness industry trends, professional standards, workforce development, and the role of physical activity in improving population health.
His international leadership includes serving as Chief of Staff to the Board of the International Confederation of Registers for Exercise Professionals (ICREPs), membership on the Board of Directors of the Health & Fitness Association (formerly IHRSA), and leadership roles within the Global Health & Fitness Alliance. Through these positions, Richard has contributed to strengthening global professional standards, industry collaboration, and advocacy efforts that support healthier and more active communities worldwide.
A passionate advocate for evidence-based physical activity and public health policy, Richard works closely with industry leaders, governments, and international organizations to elevate the role of exercise professionals and ensure greater access to quality physical activity opportunities. As a member of the World Active Council, he is committed to advancing global collaboration and helping achieve the shared mission of creating healthier, more active societies.
